* Put some crumbs of wax
into a small metallic container.
* Heat it on an electric
hot plate until the wax melts and vapourises.
* Left: Hold a burning
match 2 cm above the liquid wax. * Repeat the same experiment
using 1 ml of Diesel fuel.
Observation:
Wax and Diesel burn without a wick if they are heated for evaporation.
Explanation:
The ignition point of Diesel (= temperature at which the fuel is ignited
by a burning match placed above it) is around 70°C. Wax has
an i.p. of more than 150°C.
