addition to experiment L5:
Respiration of mosquitos needs
air even in a water butt
1 Mosquitoes lay their egg parcels into water butts after having sucked
blood from men.
In the left photo an
egg
parcel can be seen floating on a small vial full of water.
After some days hundreds of tiny white worms are moving
between the surface (for breathing)
and the bottom (searching for food).
2 In water butts these larvae rapidly grow and reach their final size
(2. photo from left):
They are attached to the water surface and use a snorkel for
breathing air from outside.
3 Soon there is a first rapid change of the body shape (3. photo
from left): Pupae have their
snorkels an the thicker front part of their bodies.
4 A few days later you will see the first males
(photo right):
They have soft mouth parts. So they are unable to sting
like the females which are hatching
later.
