The workshop Dyes and dyeing was held at the 6th European Conference
for chemistry teachers in Vienna 18th till 21th April 2001 by Dr. Mordechai Livneh
Bar-Ilan University, ISRAEL.
Two days later these dyeing
activities were modified in Lauterbach/Germany
to work with microscale materials.
What you
will need
Dyes: Acid Green 50 (A), Direct
Red 81 (D), Basic Red 15 (B), Indigo
= Vat Blue 1 (V), Methyl Orange = Indicator (I). MULTIFIBRE
6 (Testfabrics Inc.) vials 5 and 50 ml, tweezers, tissue paper, straw hot
plate.
Experiment
Multifibre
6 (left) is cut into 5 test stripes (9 x 55 mm). Right: After
1 minute at 40° C in extremely diluted aqueous solutions of the 5 dyes and after washing in water you observe
different dyeing of the 6 different fibres (Cellulose triacetate, cotton,
nylon, polyester, polyacryl, wool).
