In
the previous experiment calcium was very reactive
in water, while the reaction of magnesium was weak.
In
the following experiment magnesium (Mg) is compared with zinc (Zn), aluminium
(Al) and iron (Fe).
*
Left:
Mg, Zn, Al, Fe (from left to right) in water with 1 drop of hydrochloric
acid 25%.
*
Middle:
The same experiment later with 4 drops of hydrochloric acid.
*
Right:
The same experiment even later with 8 drops of hydrochloric acid.
Observation:
Magnesium
reacts most active and disappears first. Aluminium follows, then zinc.
Iron reacts only weak.
The series of reaction is: Ca>Mg>Al>Zn>Fe>Cu>gold
