salt 10 Slaking quicklime
= exothermic reaction with water
During adding water to quicklime
the calciumoxide in it does a chemical reaction with water. A big quantity of
heat is released that makes excess water boiling (Photo 2). This process
is called slaking. The new product is slaked lime. It contains calcium
hydroxide.

Material
Tray,
Goggles,
gloves, digital
multimeter with thermo couple, blister, quicklime of the previous
experiment. ( CaCO3).
Experiment
1.
Add drops of water to the piece of quicklime
("Branntkalk").
2.
Measure the change of temperature.
3.
Look for more changes.
Observations
a)
The temperature rises dramatically (Photo 1, 2).
b)
The volume of the sample increases.
c)
The blister melts.
d)
By adding more water and shaking a milky liquid is obtained that separates
by precipitation of a white solid (Photo 5, 6).
Explanation
This
chemical reaction is called slaking of lime, new
substance = calcium hyroxide. The milky liquid is a supension called lime
milk, the transparent liquid Lime water.
