St05 Separation of mixtures 3:  Chromatography of black ink

What you need: Felt pen STABILO point 88 fine 0,4, 5-ml Heparin vial, thinlayer foil for chromatography (silicagel), scissors, methylated spirit.
* Left: Cut 12 x 35 mm piece of this foil.
* Make to small dots on the white layer about 2 mm above its lower end.
* Photo 2:  Transfer 10 drops of methylated spirit to the vial, add the foil like seen on the photo.
Observation photo 2:  The liquid moves upwards in the white layer dissolving 3 dyes from the black dot.
Observation photo 3: The black colour was separated into yellow, violet and blue components which move upwards in the white layer.
* Right:  You may isolate the yellow, violet and blue colours by scratching the silicagel fom the the foil.
Explanation: The yellow, violet and blue components of the black mixture are dissolved in the liquid and transported upwards with different speeds.
