St10 Models
of different sulfur molecules
Yellow
sulfur, honey-like sulfur are different substances (= Allotropes)
as
they are made of different sulfur molecules. Each yellow bead in
the photos is a model for a sulfur atoms.
Please arrange
the different models of sulfur molecules by stringing these beads on wire:
Left: Just after melting sulfur consists of free molecule rings made
of 8 sulfur atoms (S8).Flüssigkeit. String 8 yellow
beads on a wire to make ring. In the next photo you can see many of these
rings from the side.
Middle:
After solidification many of these S8 -sulfur molecules are
fixed together in a lattice.
Free sulfur molecules are
obtained again by heating.
Right:
By stronger heating the molecule rings are broken. Many of these open molecules
combine to form a very long molecule chain. Assemble a model of such
a sulfur molecule chain using yellow beads and wire.l
