wat08 Sodium hydroxide solution the most common alkaline solution

Ammonia solution and lime water   are alkaline solutions that make universal indicator blue and phenolphthalein (PhPh)  red . The best known alkaline solution is sodium hydroxide solution. It is produced in huge quantities in the industry from brine in electrolytic cells.

* Dissolve a spatula of table salt in a vial with 5 ml of water.
* Add a drop of phenolphthalein solution as indicator.
* Left photo: Dip two pencil leads into the solution as electrodes , connect the with  a 9-Volt battery.
Observations right photo: 1. Red colour around the negative electrode.
2. Gas bubbles at both electrodes. 3. Chlorine smell at the positive electrode.
Explanations:
Water molecules attached to negative sodium ions react at the positive electrode forming
1. hydroxide ions (OH-aq) which make PhPh red and also 2. hydrogen gas (H2).
3.: Chloride ions react at the positive electrode releasing chlorine gas. It bleeches.
