Even non-swimmers
are floating in the Dead Sea
* Left: Water
of the Dead Sea is extremely salty: These two boys are floating on
the water though the have their arms and legs outside.
You can make your own
Dead Sea water using Dead Sea salt available in a pharmacy:
In a Liquemin
bottle mix as much of the salt with water as possible. (Undissolved
grains must remain on the bottom).
* Middle: Cola is
made of water with a lot of sugar and other substances
Does
water float on Cola? Does Cola float on Dead Sea water (TW)?
What
you need
Liquemin bottles, syringe
3 ml whith a long needle (its tip has to be removed!), water, Cola, concentrated
solution of Daed Sea salt.
Experiment
1. Right:
Press 3 ml of water (W) into the left bottle. 2.
Carefully transfer 3 ml of Cola (C) from the syringe to the bottom of the
bottle. 3.
Repeat the same procedure with Cola (C) and Dead Sea water (TW) in bottle
2 . 4.
Press 2 ml of water (W) into the right bottle , carefully add 2
ml Cola (C) below it and finally 2 ml Dead Sea water (TW) below the Cola.
Observations:
Water
always floats on the top, Cola is below water and Dead Sea Water on the
bottom.
Explanation:
Something
which is lighter always floats on a liquid. Dead Sea water is the most
heavy liquid, water is lightest. The weights of 1 mL of water, Cola or
Dead Sea water are called their densities
